34. ADVENTURE TOUR AND TRAVEL IN NORTH CAROLINA

The famous Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick structure of its kind in the United States. The island was once the haunt of the infamous pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. Except for the village around the harbour, the island is undeveloped and can be reached only by boat or small aircraft.
The state has four national forests that make an adventure tour and travel in North Carolina especially attractive to hikers. You can begin your hike among the alders, sycamore and river birch of the coastal and piedmont regions, and ascend into the spruce and fir forests of the mountains. The Mount Mitchell Trail, a trek of about five-and-a-half miles, is one of many popular hikes.

Though North Carolina is a Southern state, its mountains are high enough to provide terrific ski slopes in the winter.
